As we age, it shows in our skin. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the face and neck area where the skin is the thinnest already. The skin weakens as we get older due to our external environment, such as damage from the sun’s rays, as well as through repeated use. Think about it – every time you smile, talk, chew, basically anything, you are using the muscles in your face and neck. This repetition of muscle movement causes the unflattering sagging and wrinkles in the skin’s surface. Other factors include not drinking enough water, smoking, and an improper diet.
Fortunately, we are not resigned to living with these unsightly appearances of aging as there are a number of ways to combat wrinkles in the neck. As you will find elsewhere on this site, there are a number of neck creams like these leaders that you can apply topically and firm up the skin.
However, if you are someone who likes to “DIY”, there are a few home remedies you can try to smooth out those wrinkles.
How to Get Rid of a Neck Wrinkle Using Remedies
One of the easiest ways to get rid of, and prevent, neck wrinkles is to be sure to drink enough water. When your body is not hydrated enough, the signs are evident inside and outside of your body. Lack of water can lead to dry skin that is brittle and weak, as well as a loss of firmness in the muscles that support the epidermis. This leads to loose skin that become visible wrinkles. Be sure to drink enough water to keep all your body’s systems functioning at their best, as well as to keep your skin cells firm and plump.
This goes hand-in-hand with making sure you drink enough water. The saying “you are what you eat” is very true, and if you put junk in your body, you are going to look and feel like junk. A proper diet, ensuring you get enough fruits and vegetables most importantly to get your recommended daily intake of vitamins and minerals, ensures good health inside and out.
Keep Your Chin Up
Keeping your chin up and your head straight so that your vertebrae are aligned in a neutral position is a good way to keep wrinkles from forming prematurely. You can try this while taking a look in the mirror. First take a look while your chin is down towards your neck. Notice the folds that are created? The more often your head is in this position, the more chance these folds will become a permanent fixture. Now raise your head up, looking towards the ceiling. Notice how the skin is tightened and smoothed out? Try to avoid putting your chin to your neck when not necessary and you’ll keep skin folds from forming.
We all know the many health risks that are posed by cigarettes inside your body, but it also has an effect on your outward appearance. Tobacco use dehydrates the body, which is bad for the skin as mentioned above. It can also lead to lesser functioning of the body’s organs and processes, those that promote the production and maintenance of healthy, supple skin.
Exposure to the Sun
Try to avoid over exposure to the sun. While the primary concerns with getting too much sun are getting a bad sunburn, at the least, or risking skin cancer at worst, there are other side effects. The sun’s rays dry out the skin, leading to a thin, weakened epidermis. If you are out in the sun, be sure to wear sunblock and a hat that will cast a shadow over your face and neck if possible.
Exercises for Neck Wrinkles
We cover this in another page on this site, but it’s worth mentioning here as well since it’s something you can do at home. There are a number of neck exercises you can perform that will help tighten and firm up the skin to smooth out wrinkles, as well as prevent wrinkles from forming in the future. By strengthening the muscles underneath the skin here you can minimize the appearance of saggy and loose skin.
These are just a few things you can change in your life if you are looking to get rid of that “turkey gobbler” neck naturally, or wanting to prevent it from happening prematurely. Hope this helps!
